Bump Wills has been named the Field Manager for the Griffins when the team takes the field in the Spring of 2019.

This press release was issued on the SWL’s official website regarding the announcement:

ROYSE CITY — Former Texas Rangers infielder Elliott “Bump” Wills has been named as the manager for the new Royse City Griffins of the Southwest League of Professional Baseball.

Wills played second base for the Rangers from 1977-81 and also for the Chicago Cubs in 1982. He batted .266 for his major league career with 302 runs batted in and 196 stolen bases. He’s the son of record-setting base stealer Maury Wills, who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“I am so excited to manage the Royse City Griffins for their inaugural season in the Southwest League,” said Wills. “It has been a dream of mine to get back into professional baseball in a managerial role where I can teach and lead young players in their journey to play in Major League Baseball.”

The Royse City team will play in The Ballpark at Royse City, a proposed $11 million stadium off I-30 westbound. It’ll be located across the highway from a new Buc-ees and near the Royse City High School. The stadium will feature seating capacity of 4,000.

“We feel honored that Bump Wills will lead the Griffins in the inaugural season,” said Mark Schuster, managing partner of the Griffins. “Bump will bring decades of experience in baseball which will be so critical in building a championship team.”

“We are so thrilled to welcome Bump into our Royse City community,” said Carl Alsabrook, Royse City’s city manager. “As a lifelong Texas Ranger fan, we grew up watching Bump and his tenacity for the game and we know that he will build our Griffins team with the same tenacity.”
